The short version: it is free, it is run by one person as a hobby, and it comes with no guarantee it will be running tomorrow. Add it, use it, remove it whenever you like.
1. What this covers
These terms apply to the Sun Tzu Quote Bot ("the bot"), a Discord application that posts quotations from Sun Tzu's The Art of War. By adding the bot to a Discord server you agree to them. If you do not, remove the bot.
2. What it costs
Nothing. There is no paid tier, no subscription, no advertising, and nothing is sold. No payment will ever be requested for the bot, and any message claiming otherwise is not from the operator.
3. Availability
The bot is hosted on a single private machine and maintained by one person in their spare time. There is no uptime guarantee and no service level agreement. It may be unavailable, may miss a daily post, and may be discontinued at any time without notice.
This is stated plainly rather than buried: do not build anything you depend on around it.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the bot to break Discord's Terms of Service or Community Guidelines.
- Attempt to disrupt, overload, reverse engineer or gain unauthorised access to the bot or the machine hosting it.
- Automate the bot's commands to generate spam.
Access may be withdrawn from any server that does these things, or for any other reason, at the operator's discretion.
5. Permissions
The bot asks for exactly three Discord permissions — View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links — and requests no privileged intents. It cannot read your messages. Granting it more permissions than it asks for is unnecessary.
6. Your data
Covered by the Privacy Policy. In short, the bot
stores your server ID and one channel ID, and deletes them when you run
/suntzu-stop or remove the bot.
7. The quotations
Quotations are from Lionel Giles's 1910 translation of The Art of War, which is in the public domain. Some passages are lightly trimmed for length; wording is otherwise unaltered. Chapter attributions follow Giles's numbering.

8. No warranty
The bot is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.
9. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operator is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any loss of data, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of or inability to use the bot.
10. Changes
These terms may change. The date at the top will change with them. Continuing to use the bot after a change means you accept the revised terms.
11. Termination
You may stop using the bot at any time by removing it from your server. The operator may discontinue the bot, or withdraw access from any server, at any time.
